The Lamar Community College men's basketball team finished the regular season with an overall record of 24-6 including an 11-5 record in Region IX-South play. Lamar finished tied for second place -- just one game behind first -- and advanced to the 16-team Region IX Tournament from the South Sub-Region. The team faced Trinidad State Junior College in the first round where Lopes hosted in Wellness Center in front of a great crowd.
Having lost both regular season meetings to TSJC, Lopes were determined from the tip. It was a very close contest through nearly the thirty minutes of play, but LCC eventually pulled away and came up with the victory, 74-65. Sophomores Michael Skinner (20 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals) and Wayne Stewart (14 points, nine rebounds) led the way for the Lopes. This win moved LCC to 25-6 in the season.
"We knew this game was going to be very intense. Trinidad won both regular season meetings this year, our team had an edge all week getting ready for this game," Lopes head coach Sercan Fenerci said. "We executed the game plan very well, especially on the defensive end by stopping their top players. Everyone played with an extra energy for us."
This was Lamar's first playoff win since the 2008-09 team won the region and advanced to Nationals.
The win sent the Lopes to Gillette for the Region IX Tournament. Stories on Lamar's performance in Gillette will be published later this week.
