The Lamar Community College softball team completed a four-game sweep this weekend versus Trinidad State Junior College and McCook Community College.
Friday, April 14
To start off the weekend, the Runnin' Lopes defeated top seeded Trinidad twice in a two-game match-up. In the first game, LCC recorded 17 hits in the 10-2 victory over the Trojans. Offensively, Kelsee Bushell, Mercedes Salazar, and Kayla Whitley each recorded two RBI while Lauren Reed threw the win for the Lopes, striking out five and allowing only two earned runs. In the second game, LCC made a comeback in the sixth inning to defeat Trinidad 6-4. Larissa Royer and Kayla Whitley both went 3-for-3 at the plate. Royer also hit a home run and struck out nine Trojan batters to help lead the Runnin' Lopes to a victory.
Saturday, April 15
LCC continued their winning streak into Saturday with two wins over McCook. In the first game, the Runnin' Lopes bats were quiet until the fifth and sixth innings where they were able to put up seven runs in a 7-1 victory over McCook. Ashleigh Espinoza hit her first home run of the year to spark the LCC offense and pitcher Lauren Reed went 2-for-3 at the plate and recorded seven strikeouts in the circle. In the second game, the Lopes defeated McCook 9-1. Espinoza stayed hot at the plate, hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning and recording five RBI in the game. Catcher Caitlin McCarthy also contributed to the LCC offense going 2-for-3 at the plate. Royer threw the win for the Lopes, allowing no earned runs and only four hits in the contest.
The Runnin' Lopes are now 17-9 in Region IX play. They will take on Trinidad State at Trinidad on Wednesday and will have their last home games against Otero on Saturday, April 22.
