Four softball players sign with universities

Four Lopes softball players signed letters of intent to continue their softball careers after their sophomore seasons Lamar Community College. 

Sophomore catcher and outfielders Caitlin McCarthy signed with Colorado Christian University while outfielder Samantha McDonald, pitcher/outfielder Lauren Reed and outfielder Mercedes Salazar signed with Adams State University.

Runnin' Lopes sophomore, Caitlin McCarthy, has signed a letter of intent with Colorado Christian University to continue her softball career as a Cougar. CCU is a NCAA Division II school that competes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and is located in Lakewood, Colorado.

McCarthy has a strong, knowledgeable presence behind the plate and received Region IX Conference Honors as a catcher in her first season as a Lope. Her freshman year, she held a .437 batting average and contributed 50 RBI while leading the team with 23 doubles.

"We are very proud of Caitie and super excited for her to continue playing at CCU, " said head coach Kristen Silva. "She is a great asset and strong leader for our team, and I know she will continue to lead and succeed as a Cougar."

Runnin' Lopes sophomores, Samantha McDonald, Mercedes Salazar, and Lauren Reed have all signed letters of intent with Adams State University to continue their softball careers as Grizzlies. ASU is a NCAA Division II school located in Alamosa, Colorado, that competes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

Sam McDonald is a speedy outfielder who played centerfield her first season as a Lope and is a lefty slapper at the plate. She is the quickest athlete on the LCC roster, leading the team with 15 stolen bases her freshman year. McDonald also hit .444 for the Lopes offense, with an on-base percentage of .467.

Mercedes Salazar is also an outfielder for the Runnin' Lopes and a strong hitter at the plate. Her freshman year, Salazar received Region IX Conference Honors as an outfielder with a batting average of .444. She contributed 59 RBI and 12 home runs to the Lopes offense with an on-base percentage of .490.

Lauren Reed is a pitcher/outfielder who helped LCC to 28 wins last season. She led the 2017 pitching staff with 19-13 record and threw 178.1 innings with an ERA of 4.55. Reed allowed only 44 walks on the season and struck out 94. She also batted .462 for the Lopes with a team-high on-base percentage of .550.

"Lauren, Sam, and Mercedes will all contribute to the Adams State softball team both offensively and defensively," Silva said. "We are very excited for them to continue their careers as Grizzlies, and proud of their accomplishments on the softball field."
