LCC women's basketball brought home a decisive vicotry over Northeastern Junior College in the first game back from a three-week winter break. The final score was 75-52 bringing the team's record to 7-9 overall and 3-0 in the region.
The Lopes scored first and made a six point run before the Plainswomen answered back to tie the game at six points midway through the first quarter. The Lopes took the lead with a three-point shot from Caylynn Wolf and never looked back, defeating NJC by more than 20 points.
While the Lopes struggled from behind the arc, shooting only 21.1 percent, the team outshot NJC from the field and the foul line. LCC made 49.2 percent from the field in and an impressive 81.3 from the foul line compared to NJC's 30 percent from the field and 53.8 from the line.
"I thought our team played really well. We were able to get out in transition and get some easy baskets, we rebounded the basketball very well, and shared the basketball offensively. 24 assists on 29 made shots is a great example of unselfish basketball and playing together, not worrying about who scores as long as WE score," said Head Coach Landon Steele.
Sophomore TiAna Davila led the Lopes in scoring with 17 points, followed closely by Damilola Balogun and Sabela Reigosa Pernas both with 12. Ann-Kathrin Schaetzle and Shelby Hawkins contributed eight and seven points, respectively.
Claudia del Moral Garcia led the team in two categories, contributing nine assists and eight rebounds to the Lopes victory. Balogun and Schaetzle also pulled in six rebounds each.
LCC is on the road this coming weekend for a pair of South-Sub Region games. The Lopes will visit Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington on Friday, January 13. Tip-off is set for 5:00pm. Then on Saturday, January 14, the Lopes teams will travel to Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff. The game will start at 2:00pm.
